A New Era of Competition: Analysing the NBA In-Season Tournament
If you are a basketball fan, then you would be aware that the National Basketball Association (NBA) In-Season Tournament is not just coming up. In fact, it is right around the corner. It’s an exciting time for everyone, but if you’re a new fan, or just want to make sure you have your facts right before the first game, we have put together this article to explain how the NBA In-Season Tournament works, and how you can support your favourite team at home.
How does the NBA In-Season Tournament work?
Like the name suggests, the NBA In-Season Tournament is a sort of mini-games, played alongside the regular season to test a series of teams against each other. The winners will take home the coveted NBA cup and award money to the tune of $500,000 each.
This ‘mini-game’ uses randomly selected teams from both the Eastern and Western Conferences. Three groups of five teams from each conference will face off in a series of two home games and two away games, with each group playing each other at least once.
At the end of these games, there will be three of the highest-ranking groups, plus one additional team (16 teams total) who will make up the quarter-finals. These games will be played as knock-out rounds, where each team will play to make it to the semi-finals.
Eventually, only two final teams will remain. They will play each other in the ultimate showdown for the NBA Cup and worldwide fame and glory. This championship game takes place on the 10th of December, with the other games on the schedule available online.
What is the point of the NBA In-Season Tournament?
Aside from just being a whole load of fun, the NBA In-Season Tournament also provides the league with the ability to bring interest to the early section of the regular season. These games are often considered sort of perfunctory, unless you are a really hardcore fan, so having a high-stakes mini game is a great way to build up anticipation before the official season gets going.
The NBA In-Season Tournament also allows for more levity, with colourful courts and new basketball uniform design available to be seen and displayed to the public for the very first time. This helps to create a really fun atmosphere across the globe, as those tuning in can comment on the courts and uniforms as well as the play.
It also allows people the chance to develop favourite teams and players for later in the season, particularly if they are new fans and haven’t been exposed to much basketball before. Many people have fun watching the games each year, with the overall high for the past five years being a whopping total of 5.5 million people tuning in last year.
How can I support my favourite team?
If you are unable to physically get to your team’s local games, which is often the case for fans who live overseas or far away from the games’ locations, it’s hard to capture the full fun of the games. But, there are many other ways you can support your local team, even if you can’t be there in person.
You can always watch the games and support them by simply being a viewer, and that is more than enough to be a true fan. However, if you have a bit of spare time and energy and you want to more actively support your favourite teams, there are many ways you can cheer the team on from afar.
Creating a chant or song that you can post on social media can help to raise the overall profile of the team and may help them to get more support and attention from local media. If you aren’t a fan of putting yourself out to the world, try making some fun signs or statues of your favourite players. You can even dress them up in their uniforms!
